BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 2:16-17; 3:1-24

I confess my iniquity (Psalm 38:18a, NIV).

To help the child know that sin came into the world through Satan when he deceived Adam and Eve.

During and after the lesson, each child will show that he or she understands the lesson by:

1. Recalling how Satan tempted Adam and Eve to sin.

2. Mentioning the 3 ways Satan tempts us today to sin.

1. The Command – Gen 2:16-17

2. The Disobedience – Gen 3:1-6

3. The Consequence – Gen 3: 7-24

In 1 John 2:16, we are given a summary of sins that are in the world. The sins are (1.) Lust of the flesh, (2.) Lust of the eyes and, (3.) Pride of life. After God had created Adam and Eve, the devil tempted them with these sins and they failed. The devil tempts us in the same way.

The Lord Jesus himself was also tempted with these things according to Luke 4:1-13. While Adam and Eve were defeated by the devil, Jesus defeated the devil. We too, through the help of Christ, can also overcome the devil and his temptations.

1. The Command – Gen 2:16,17

God placed Adam and Eve in a beautiful garden called the Garden of Eden. They were very happy living in this garden. Every evening God usually come down to talk with them and have fellowship with them. Everything they needed was provided in the garden. God instructed them to eat every fruit in the garden, but they were not to eat of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. God wanted to see whether Adam and Eve would love and obey Him.

2. The Disobedience – Gen 3:1-6

One day, Satan came to tempt Eve to disobey God. Satan used the serpent (snake) which is one of the animals in the garden.

Eve was alone beside the tree of the knowledge of good and bad. The fruit looked delicious and beautiful. This is lust of the eyes. Eve began to see this fruit as good for food (lust of the flesh) and as something that can make one wise (pride of life). But Eve remembered what God told them. But the devil came through the serpent and told Eve that nothing will happen if they eat the fruit. Rather, they will become wise. Thus the devil lied to Eve. He is a liar and the father of all liars. Eve listened to the devil and took the fruit and ate. She also gave some to Adam who ate It. They forgot that God commanded them not to eat it. And they disobeyed God. Nobody can become wise by disobeying God. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” The Bible tells us that every disobedience is sin. Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God. This is how sin came into the good world that God had just created.

3. The Consequences – Gen 3:7-24

When Adam and Eve sinned, their fellowship with God became broken. They became naked spiritually and physically. Adam and Eve became ashamed. Sin is a shameful thing. They lost the peace of God in their hearts. God came down to visit them and when they heard His voice in the garden, they ran away and hid, that is spiritual death (Ephesians 2:1,5). The peace and fellowship of God was taken away from them.

God was not happy with Adam and Eve. But He had mercy on them because they confessed to Him that they were naked (sinners). He killed a lamb to cover both their physical and spiritual nakedness. The blood of the animal covered their sin, while skin was used in covering their bodies. God promised to raise a seed from the woman who will defeat the devil.

Though God is merciful, yet sin must be punished. God pronounced judgement on all of them. The serpent will go on its belly and eat only dust. Eve would suffer pain during childbirth. The soil must be tilled before Adam can grow any food. Lastly, Adam and Eve were driven away from the beautiful garden. All these were the judgement God brought upon them because of sin.

Satan always comes to tempt us to disobey God the same way he tempted Adam and Eve. He also tempted the Lord Jesus Christ. But Jesus defeated him at Calvary. Jesus Christ is the seed of the woman(Eve) God promised to raise to defeat Satan. Jesus is a winner and Satan is a loser. We must stand on the victory of Jesus and defeat Satan every day.

Henry was conversing with two of his classmates – David and John when a friend of Henry’s father came around. Henry greeted him and introduced his friends. The man shook their hands and gave each boy N100.00.

The boys then went to a supermarket to buy biscuits with their money. Henry picked a packet and put it beside his N100.00 waiting for the others to do same. John took one packet and dropped it into his pocket. He announced to the others he was not going to waste his money. He then tried to convince David to do the same thing.

David was baffled because he had never stolen anything before. The temptation was too much for him. He looked at Henry and Henry told him not to steal the biscuit but rather pay for it. John sneered at David and called him a coward. Henry told him that it was not cowardice for one to do what he was supposed to do.

David thought for a while, then he drew his money from his pocket and put it beside the biscuit. It was then that John regretted and pulled out the biscuit from his pocket. Three of them went to the counter and paid for the biscuits.
